She is an active member of the Psychology team and participates in the Green Champions Network at UHI, working to advance sustainability and climate adaptation initiatives within the university community. Her professional background includes roles in NHS Shetland, where she designed and implemented wellbeing programs such as Mental Health First Aid and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills, later scaled across Scotland. She also contributed to community health initiatives like walking for health and GP referral to exercise schemes.
Mari holds an MSc in Sport and Exercise Psychology from UHI, with a research project investigating the relationship between social identity, coastal environments, and health/wellbeing through coastal rowing. Her current research projects apply social identity theory to NHS staff wellbeing and team dynamics, examine the cost-of-living crisis’s impact on rural sustainable behaviors, and explore skatepark use’s effects on mental health.
Her research outputs reflect a focus on healthcare systems, identity-based interventions, and environmental sustainability. Recent work includes presentations on the Social Identity Project (SHIP) and the cost-of-living crisis at 2023 Just Transition conferences. Earlier contributions included posters on remote medical education at AMEE 2010 and a foundational 2005 paper on suicide prevention program delivery.
Mari has not received explicit scientific awards but has engaged in interdisciplinary collaborations, such as her involvement in CLS (Centre for Living Sustainability) and research partnerships with NHS staff and skatepark communities. Her advising and grants narrative highlights her applied research in community health and sustainability, though formal advisees are not listed. She is affiliated with UHI Inverness’s Psychology team and the Green Champions Network, leveraging these platforms to bridge theoretical research with practical community solutions.
