Margarita Gomez is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair of the Teacher Education Department at Loyola University Maryland. Her research focuses on multilingual students' writing development, equity in assessment, and sociolinguistic justice. She holds a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Boston College, an M.S. in Education from SUNY Binghamton, and a B.A. in Political Science and Communications from Boston College. A former bilingual elementary teacher, she teaches courses on literacy processes, second language assessment, and language, literacy, and culture.
Her research interests include multilingual policy, translanguaging practices, and culturally responsive assessment tools. She has co-authored works in Reading Research Quarterly, Bilingual Research Journal, and Elementary School Journal, among others. Notable awards include the 2018 Faculty Excellence in Engaged Scholarship Award and the 2013 Emerging Scholar Award. She mentors at Archbishop Borders K-8 Dual Language School and serves on editorial boards for language and literacy journals.
Gomez advocates for sociolinguistic justice through writing assessments that validate students’ linguistic repertoires. Her recent projects include grants supporting translanguaging writing clubs and research on bilingual writing efficacy. She is an active member of professional organizations like the Literacy Research Association and American Educational Research Association.
