Overview
Professor Margarita Balmaceda is a leading scholar in the School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University. Her work focuses on the intersection of international relations, political economy, and technology, particularly in the context of energy systems, decarbonization, and post-Soviet states.
Education
She holds a Ph.D. in Politics from Princeton University and completed post-doctoral training in Ukrainian Studies at Harvard University. She has pursued specialized technical training in metallurgical technology (World Steel University), fertilizer markets (Fertilizer Academy), and sustainable fertilizers (International Fertilizer Association).
Research Interests
Her research bridges Science and Technology Studies with International Relations, analyzing energy-industrial chains (steel, fertilizers) in Ukraine, the former USSR, and the EU. Current projects include The Last Frontier of Decarbonization, examining hidden industrial carbon emissions through a geopolitical lens. She explores themes such as:

- Russian energy leverage in Eurasia
- Climate policy in industrial sectors
