Margarethe Adams serves as an Assistant Professor at Stony Brook University, specializing in ethnomusicology with extensive fieldwork across Central Asia including Kazakhstan, northwest China, and Mongolia.
Her research centers on the intersection of temporality and politics in postsocialist cultural contexts, examining how public celebrations and performances in Kazakhstan manifest competing temporal framings—utopian futures and romanticized pasts—that shape contemporary identity politics. Current investigations delve into popular religious practices such as Muslim pilgrimage, spiritual healing, and Korean evangelical movements within Kazakhstani society.
Adams is the author of the monograph "Steppe Dreams: Time, Mediation, and Postsocialist Celebrations in Kazakhstan," which analyzes the political significance of time in public events and their profound impact on personal lives and emotional experiences of Kazakhstanis.
