Margareta Gruber OSF is Professor and Chair of New Testament Exegesis and Biblical Theology at Vinzenz Pallotti University in Vallendar, Germany. She previously served as Dean of the Faculty of Theology from April 2015 to July 2021. Her academic journey includes the Laurentius Klein Chair for Biblical and Ecumenical Theology at Dormitio Abbey in Jerusalem (2009-2013) and professorial positions at the University of Augsburg and the Philosophical-Theological College in Vallendar.
Her educational background includes a Habilitation (Dr. theol. habil.) from the Philosophical-Theological College in Vallendar/Koblenz (2007), a Doctorate (Dr. theol.) from the Philosophical-Theological University of Frankfurt/Sankt Georgen with highest honors (1997), and a Diplom in Catholic Theology with distinction (1987). Her studies spanned Catholic Theology and German Studies at Tübingen and Jerusalem, supported by DAAD scholarships.
Gruber's research centers on Johannine literature, particularly the Gospel of John and Revelation, with growing emphasis on ecological and urban theology. She explores how biblical texts address contemporary crises through themes of absence and presence, kenotic theology, and interreligious engagement. Her work demonstrates how ancient texts can inspire hope in modern contexts, especially regarding ecological challenges and urban development.
Her publication trends reveal a consistent focus on New Testament exegesis with increasing interdisciplinary connections to environmental studies, urban theory, and interfaith dialogue. Recent works examine Revelation's vision of the Heavenly Jerusalem as an ecological and urban utopia, connecting ancient apocalyptic imagery with contemporary planetary concerns.
- Dr.-Leopold-Lucas-Nachwuchswissenschaftlerpreis, Universität Tübingen (1991)
Gruber serves on the editorial board of Concilium (since 2018) and the scientific advisory board of Geist und Leben (since 2013). She has advised the German Bishops' Conference on women's roles in church and society (2007-2017) and participated in the Synodal Way's Forum III (2019-2023). Her international engagements include representing Concilium at global conferences and participating in university exchanges with Iran.
As an active member of multiple academic communities including SNTS, AKN, and the European Society for Catholic Theology, Gruber collaborates with international scholars on biblical interpretation and theological reflection. Her recent lectures on 'The Birthing Christ' and 'Mystics of Abandonment' demonstrate her innovative approach to connecting ancient texts with contemporary spiritual experience.
