Prof. Margareta Friman is a transportation researcher at Karlstad University, Sweden, holding the title of Professor since 2010. Previously, she served as Associate Professor (2004) and earned her doctoral degrees in psychology from the University of Gothenburg (Fil lic 1998; Fil dr 2000). She leads SAMOT (Sustainable Mobility and Transport) research center, recognized as Europe's top transportation research group in 2015. Her work focuses on travel satisfaction, sustainability, behavioral change, and wellbeing, collaborating with academia, businesses, and governments globally.
Research interests include psychological aspects of travel (e.g., car use reduction, public transport satisfaction), accessibility, child wellbeing, and intervention strategies for sustainable mobility. She pioneered metrics like 'perceived accessibility' and co-developed frameworks like the 'Balanced Transport Intervention Ladder.'
Publications emphasize empirical studies on travel behavior, policy impacts, and wellbeing linkages. Her 2025 work introduces the 'travel-hope framework,' exploring hope's role in sustainable mobility.
