Essi Sairanen is a Postdoc researcher in Psychology at Karlstad University's Department of Psychology, specializing in Contextual Behavioral Science (CBS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Relational Frame Theory (RFT). Her work focuses on behavioral change mechanisms, web/mobile interventions, and psychological flexibility in eating regulation and parental wellbeing.
She earned her PhD in Psychology from the University of Jyväskylä in 2016, supervised by Prof. Raimo Lappalainen, and holds a Master's degree in Psychology from the same institution (2011). Her research bridges clinical psychology, digital health, and public health, with projects including VR-assisted interventions, smartphone-based wellbeing tools, and ACT-based therapies for parents of children with chronic conditions.
Her recent studies emphasize mechanisms of change in ACT interventions, such as virtual reality's impact on self-perception and the role of psychological flexibility in stress reduction. She collaborates extensively with multidisciplinary teams on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating ACT's effects on biomarkers, dietary behavior, and parental distress.
Key projects include developing web-based ACT programs for parental wellbeing, investigating sleep-eating habit links, and exploring mobile app adherence in health interventions. Her work integrates technology (e.g., VR, apps) with traditional therapeutic frameworks to enhance intervention accessibility and effectiveness.
