Margaret Shackell

Margaret Shackell is an Associate Professor at the School of Business, Ithaca College, holding dual directorship roles as Director of Graduate Business Programs (since 2023) and Director of the MS Accounting Program (since 2022). Her academic career spans over two decades, including prior appointments as Assistant Professor at Ithaca College (2017-2022), Lecturer at Cornell University's Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management (2007-2017), and Assistant Professor at the University of Notre Dame's Mendoza College of Business (2000-2007).

Dr. Shackell earned her Ph.D. in 1999 from the University of Michigan, an M. Acc in 1990, and an Honors B.A. in Accounting in 1989, both from the University of Waterloo. She is a Chartered Professional Accountant (Ontario) and a Certified Management Accountant, bringing professional accounting expertise to her academic role.

Her research centers on accounting phenomena, specifically examining performance measurement systems, incentive structures, managerial decision processes, subjectivity in evaluations, and ratcheting effects. This work contributes to understanding how accounting information influences organizational behavior and strategic choices.

In addition to her research, Professor Shackell actively shapes accounting education through program leadership and teaching diverse courses including Accounting Analytics, Auditing, Cost Accounting, and Governmental and Not for Profit Accounting. Her industry experience at firms like BDO Dunwoody and McLean, Capin & Jamieson informs her practical approach to curriculum development.
