Margaret M. Chou is an Associate Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. She holds graduate group affiliations with the Pharmacology and Cell and Molecular Biology programs, contributing to interdisciplinary research and education.
- B.A. in Biochemistry, Barnard College (1987)
- Ph.D. in Molecular Oncology, Rockefeller University (1993)
- Post-doctoral training in Cell Biology, Harvard Medical School (1997)
Her research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of malignant transformation, particularly in bone and soft tissue tumors. Key areas include oncogenic signaling via the TRE17/USP6 oncogene, chromosomal translocations in sarcomas, and the interplay between tumor cells and their microenvironment. Recent work highlights TRE17’s role in NF-κB activation, matrix metalloproteinase regulation, and bone morphogenetic protein dysregulation.
Publications reveal a strong emphasis on TRE17/USP6 oncogene function, pathogenic translocations in bone/soft tissue tumors, and signaling pathways (NF-κB, BMP). Subfields span oncogene mechanisms, tumor microenvironment modulation, and molecular diagnostics of rare neoplasms.
