Margaret Barrett serves as Professor and Head of the Sir Zelman Cowen School of Music at Monash University, with additional leadership roles as Director of the Australian Music Centre, Queensland Symphony Orchestra, and Queensland Music Festival.
Her research program investigates Music and Arts Education through the lens of human cognition and socio-cultural development, focusing on aesthetic decision-making, arts engagement value for youth, children's musical cognition, identity construction through music, and creativity pedagogy. She pioneers innovative arts-based inquiry methodologies to advance understanding of music learning processes across developmental stages.
Key recognitions include:
- Fulbright Senior Research Fellowship (2018) for Smithsonian Institute/Library of Congress archival research
- Beaufort Visiting Research Fellowship at Cambridge University (2019)
- IRCAM research residency funded by Foundation de Maison des Sciences de l’Homme (2019)

Professor Barrett has secured substantial research funding as lead investigator on seven Australian Research Council grants and co-investigator on two additional projects. Her professional leadership extends globally through past presidencies of the International Society for Music Education (2012-2014) and World Alliance for Arts Education (2013-2015), alongside foundational roles in the Asia-Pacific Symposium for Music Education Research and Australian Society for Music Education.
