Maren Wehrle is Associate Professor in Practical Philosophy at the Erasmus School of Philosophy, Erasmus University Rotterdam. She holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Freiburg (2011) and previously served as a Post-Doctoral Researcher and Lecturer at KU Leuven. Her academic work bridges phenomenology, cognitive psychology, and philosophical anthropology.
- PhD in Philosophy, University of Freiburg (2011)
- MA in Philosophy, German Literature, and Historical Anthropology, University of Freiburg (2006)
Her research centers on phenomenology, particularly the philosophy of attention, habit, embodiment, and normativity. She explores how lived experience intersects with cognitive science and feminist theory. Her work critically examines concepts like normality, passivity, and the bodily basis of subjectivity. She is deeply engaged in transdisciplinary research, especially through her leadership in the Flagship Integrative Neuromedicine project, which connects philosophy with neuroscience and medicine.
The trends in her recent publications reflect a sustained focus on phenomenological theory applied to cognitive and social dimensions—particularly how habits break, how attention mediates reality, and how normality functions as a claim to truth. Her work increasingly integrates philosophical analysis with empirical neuroscience, advocating for a holistic understanding of neurological disorders from molecule to lived experience.
She has co-edited significant volumes in the field, including the Husserl Handbuch and Access and Mediation: Transdisciplinary Perspectives on Attention, demonstrating her central role in contemporary phenomenological scholarship.
- Principal Investigator, Flagship Integrative Neuromedicine (Convergence Health & Technology)
- Supervision available in: Phenomenology, Cognitive Sciences, Feminist Philosophy, Philosophy of Technology
She actively advises PhD candidates and participates in academic and public outreach, delivering lectures and organizing events that bridge philosophy with societal concerns. Her work in the Flagship project exemplifies her commitment to integrating philosophical insight into translational medical research.
Maren Wehrle is a core member of the Flagship Integrative Neuromedicine team, a large-scale interdisciplinary initiative involving Erasmus MC, Erasmus University Rotterdam, and TU Delft. This project investigates neurological disorders across biological, psychological, and philosophical dimensions, aiming to develop more effective and socially accepted treatments.
