Prof. Marcus Maurer is a full-time faculty member and holds the position of Professor of Communication Science at the Institute of Journalism at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz since 2014. Previously, he was a Professor for Empirical Methods in Communication Science at Friedrich Schiller University Jena (2010-2014), and held visiting professorships at FU Berlin, LMU Munich, and the University of Zurich (2006-2010). He completed his doctorate in 2002 on 'Political Disenchantment through Media Reports' and habilitation in 2008, both at JGU Mainz, after studying Journalism, Political Science, and German Philology (1991-1997).
His research focuses on political communication, media effects, nonverbal communication, and empirical methods. Notable work includes studies on televised political debates, refugee crisis reporting, and the impact of social media on political discourse. He has served as Managing Director of the Institute of Journalism (2017-2019), spokesperson of the DGPuK Methods Section (2006-2010), and since 2024 is a Member of the Executive Board of the Gutenberg Research College.

He has led projects evaluating road safety campaigns (2010-2017) and climate journalism (2022-2023). His team includes researchers like Dr. Pablo Jost and Dr. Simon Kruschinski, focusing on digital communication, media content analysis, and automated text-mining tools (e.g., Argument Mining).
Maurer’s work critically engages with the role of media in democracy, emphasizing the interplay between journalistic practices and public opinion. Recent projects analyze online misinformation, the effects of political microtargeting, and the dynamics of epistemic authority in the digital public sphere.
