Marcus D. King is a Professor of the Practice in Environment and International Affairs at Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, with a joint appointment at Earth Commons (Georgetown's Institute for Environment & Sustainability). He previously served as the John O. Rankin Associate Professor and Director of the MA in International Affairs Program at George Washington University's Elliott School. His roles include Director of the MS in Environment & International Affairs program and past leadership positions in governmental organizations such as the Office of the Secretary of Defense and Office of the Secretary of Energy. Dr. King has held advisory roles with the Council on Strategic Risks and the Center for Climate and Security.
- Education: Ph.D. from Tufts University; BSFS from Georgetown University; M.A. in International Relations & Security from Tufts University.
His research focuses on environmental security, climate resilience, and transnational threats in fragile states. Recent work examines linkages between water scarcity and extremist violence in Africa and the Middle East. He has authored influential books including Weaponizing Water (2023) and contributed to studies on Middle East water conflicts and post-pandemic terrorism dynamics.
Dr. King's career spans academia, government, and think tanks, with expertise in defense policy, energy security, and UN climate negotiations. He currently advises on strategic climate risks and maintains affiliations with multiple institutions addressing global environmental challenges.
