Marcus Gutjahr is a Senior Scientist at GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, where he works in the Research Division 2: Marine Biogeochemistry, specifically in the Marine Geosystems unit. He has been with GEOMAR since 2013 and has an extensive background in isotope geochemistry and paleooceanography.
Dr. Gutjahr received his Dr. sc. nat. from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ) in 2007, an M.Sc. in Geology from the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand in 2002, and completed his undergraduate intermediate degree at Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen, Germany in 1999. Prior to joining GEOMAR, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Southampton (2011-2012) and the University of Bristol (2007-2011).
Dr. Gutjahr's research focuses on the development and application of novel isotope geochemical tools for modern and paleooceanographic research. His main interests include Southern Ocean circulation dynamics, Antarctic Bottom Water formation, the trace metal budget of the Southern Ocean (particularly lead and neodymium), atmospheric and marine carbon cycling during major climatic perturbations in Earth's history, the development of new isotope geochemical tracers for weathering conditions, and the disintegration of the North American Laurentide Ice Sheet. His work often involves dedicated calibration of new marine archives.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on using isotope systems (particularly neodymium, lead, and tungsten) to trace ocean circulation patterns, ice sheet dynamics, and biogeochemical cycles across various timescales from sub-millennial to Cenozoic. His research spans multiple ocean basins with particular emphasis on the Southern Ocean, North Atlantic, and Pacific sectors.
- Swiss National Science Foundation fellowship (2007)
- EU Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship (2008/2009)
Dr. Gutjahr has led and participated in numerous research expeditions, including RV Polarstern expeditions to the Southern Ocean and Weddell Sea, and served as co-PI for IODP Expedition 382 "Iceberg Alley". His work involves extensive field research, laboratory analysis, and international collaboration across multiple institutions.
His research group at GEOMAR focuses on marine geochemistry and paleooceanography, utilizing advanced analytical techniques to study past and present ocean circulation and climate dynamics. The team frequently collaborates with international partners on large-scale ocean drilling and research vessel expeditions.
