Professor Marcus Grimm serves as Academic Head of Centre of Research and Funding and Professor and Programme Director for the Bachelor's Programme in Nutritional Therapy and Counselling at the Cologne Campus of SRH University of Health since October 1, 2021. With a distinguished career spanning over two decades in Alzheimer's disease research, Prof. Grimm has established himself as a leading expert in the intersection of lipid metabolism and neurodegenerative disorders.
Prof. Grimm completed his biochemistry studies at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt with support from the German Academic Scholarship Foundation. He earned his PhD summa cum laude from the Center for Molecular Biology (ZMBH) at Heidelberg University, where he demonstrated the bidirectional interaction between Alzheimer's disease and lipid homeostasis, publishing findings in high-impact journals including Nature Cell Biology. During his doctoral studies, he concurrently completed an MBA through distance learning. He later habilitated at Saarland University in the field of Alzheimer's disease prevention, receiving a research prize in 2010.
Prof. Grimm's research program has consistently focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms linking lipid metabolism to Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis. His work has established critical connections between dietary components, lipid homeostasis, and amyloid-beta processing. With an h-index of 36 and over 3,500 total citations, his research has significantly advanced understanding of how nutritional interventions might prevent or mitigate Alzheimer's disease progression. Key areas of investigation include fatty acid metabolism, vitamin effects on neurodegeneration, and lipidomics approaches to understanding Alzheimer's disease mechanisms.
His most recent publications demonstrate a continued focus on lipidomics, fatty acid metabolism, and nutritional interventions in Alzheimer's disease. The research shows promising connections between specific dietary components and amyloid-beta degradation pathways, with potential implications for therapeutic development. His work on the LipiDiDiet clinical trial represents a significant contribution to understanding how multinutrient formulations might affect cognitive decline in prodromal Alzheimer's disease.
- Research prize in 2010
- Summa cum laude for PhD
- Multiple patents related to Alzheimer's disease treatment
- Extensive publication record with over 3500 citations
Beyond his research and teaching responsibilities, Prof. Grimm provides advisory services in nutritional counseling and therapy and is involved in establishing a nutritional counseling center. He maintains an active research laboratory that operates as part of the German Institute for Dementia Prevention, providing opportunities for student involvement and continuing his groundbreaking work at the intersection of nutrition and neurodegenerative disease.
