Marcus Feldman is a Professor in the Department of Biology at Stanford University, with affiliations to Bio-X, Stanford Cancer Institute, Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute, and Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment. His research spans genetic and cultural evolution, mathematical biology, and Chinese demography, particularly focusing on sex ratio imbalances, rural-to-urban migration, and aging populations. He leads long-term projects with institutions in China, Israel, and Japan on human genetic models and cultural transmission dynamics. Recent studies explore the role of conformity in cultural evolution, HIV risk behaviors among rural migrants, and ecological impacts of microbiome dysbiosis.
- Burnet C. and Mildred Finley Wohlford Professor (Biology)
- Director, Morrison Institute for Population Biology and Resource Studies (1986–Present)
- Co-Director, Center for Computational, Evolutionary and Human Genetics (2012–Present)
His 2025–2023 publications examine ordered trait conformity, clean energy's economic impact in China, disaster preparedness in rural populations, Austronesian cultural clusters, and evolutionary mechanisms for altruism. He teaches advanced courses in population genetics, theoretical biology, and evolutionary dynamics. Awards include the 2024 Society of Molecular Biology and Evolution Lifetime Achievement Award. His work challenges biological determinism and addresses policy implications for migration, education, and public health.
- Key research areas: Cultural evolution, demographic transitions, social learning biases
- Advises doctoral students in biological and computational evolutionary studies
- Collaborates with universities in China, Israel, and Japan
