Marcus Casey

Marcus Casey is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), holding a PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2009) and a BA from Howard University (2002). He is also a Nonresident Fellow at the Brookings Institution’s Economic Studies program and previously served as an inaugural David M. Rubenstein Fellow (2018–2020). His research focuses on urban, labor, and public economics, with particular emphasis on neighborhood dynamics, housing markets, inequality, and education.

Key research interests include the evolution of Black neighborhoods, racial price differentials in housing, and the interplay between technological change and labor markets. His work has been published in journals like the American Economic Review and Journal of Urban Economics. Casey teaches courses in public finance, urban economics, and econometrics at UIC. He has held a National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship at Duke University and currently serves as 2nd Vice President of the Midwest Economics Association.

His ongoing projects explore thriving Black neighborhoods, high-frequency housing price dynamics, and the impact of childhood environments on intergenerational mobility. Casey frequently contributes policy analyses to Brookings and has been featured in outlets like Mother Jones and Politico.
