Professor Marcus Berliant is a Professor of Economics and Chair of the Ph.D. Admissions Committee at Washington University in St. Louis. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on economic theory, public finance, urban economics, and positive political theory. Current work includes studies on income taxation politics, knowledge creation microstructure, and urban growth dynamics.
Key publications span topics such as tax equity, public goods provision, and urban spatial models. He has advised 39 Ph.D. students, many placed at top institutions like Stanford University. Awards include Fellow of the Regional Science Association International (2005), two Outstanding Faculty Mentor Awards, and the 2003 Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award. Prior to Washington University, he taught at the University of Rochester and served as a Congressional staff member.
Research interests emphasize interdisciplinary approaches, blending mathematical rigor with policy relevance.
