Marcos Pablo Centeno Martin is a Lecturer in Japanese Studies and coordinator of the Japanese programme at Birkbeck, University of London, within the Department of Cultures and Languages. Previously, he taught at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), where he convened the MA Global Cinemas and the Transcultural. His academic background includes a PhD from the Universitat de València, where he was affiliated with the Faculty of Philology, Translation and Communication and the Institute of Educational Creativity and Innovation (ICIE).
- PhD, Universitat de València: Thesis on Susumu Hani’s contributions to Japanese documentary and youth cinema.
His research expertise lies in Japanese cinema, particularly avant-garde and documentary traditions, transnational film practices, and the representation of marginalized communities such as the Ainu. He critically examines how Japanese cinema has been framed within Eurocentric narratives and advocates for transnational and transcultural methodologies in film studies. His work interrogates the visual construction of ethnicity, the politics of memory in postwar Japan, and the global flows of media.
His recent publications span topics from the early cinematic depictions of the Ainu to the transnational dimensions of Japanese youth stardom. He has co-edited significant volumes and contributed to leading journals in film and Japanese studies. His work demonstrates a strong interdisciplinary approach, bridging film theory, cultural studies, anthropology, and history.
The trend in his articles reflects a consistent focus on deconstructing national cinematic boundaries, emphasizing hybridity, transnational influence, and the socio-political dimensions of representation in Japanese media. His scholarship reveals a deep engagement with both historical and contemporary issues in Japanese visual culture.
