Dr. Marco Pisa serves as a Senior Multiple Sclerosis Fellow at the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences within the Medical Sciences Division at the University of Oxford. He is also pursuing his DPhil at Oxford under the supervision of Prof. De Luca. Dr. Pisa maintains affiliations with Trinity College, Oxford, where he serves as a Specialist Clinical Advisor, and contributes to undergraduate medical education.
Dr. Pisa received his medical degree and neurology training at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, Italy, where he trained under world-leading MS specialists Prof. Comi and Prof. Filippi. During his time in Milan, he served as a senior registrar and locum consultant, developing comprehensive expertise in MS diagnosis and treatment. He subsequently moved to Oxford supported by the Oxford-Quinnipiac partnership and a prestigious Clarendon Fund scholarship.
Dr. Pisa's research primarily focuses on biomarkers for tracking multiple sclerosis progression, with significant contributions across clinical studies, neurophysiological research (including Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, Optical Coherence Tomography, and Evoked Potentials), and fluid biomarkers. His current DPhil research investigates the neuropathology of progressive MS. His work demonstrates a strong emphasis on understanding neurodegeneration mechanisms in MS, vascular contributions to pathology, and advanced imaging techniques for monitoring disease progression.
Analysis of Dr. Pisa's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on multiple sclerosis pathology, with particular attention to neurodegeneration markers, vascular contributions to disease progression, and advanced imaging techniques. His research spans from molecular studies of neuropathology to clinical investigations of disease-modifying therapies and comorbidities. A notable trend is his increasing focus on iron deposition, vascular pathology, and the relationship between structural changes and clinical outcomes in MS.
- Early Career Researcher Prize at the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, University of Oxford
Dr. Pisa has been actively involved in research projects supported by various funding mechanisms including the Oxford-Quinnipiac partnership and the Clarendon Fund scholarship. His research group, the Neurodegeneration and Inflammation Research Group, focuses on understanding the complex interplay between neurodegeneration and inflammation in multiple sclerosis. He collaborates extensively with international research teams across Europe and North America, contributing to large cohort studies like the CROCTINO cohort.
Dr. Pisa is a core member of the Neurodegeneration and Inflammation Research Group at the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences. This multidisciplinary team combines expertise in neuropathology, neuroimaging, clinical neurology, and molecular biology to investigate the mechanisms underlying progressive multiple sclerosis. The group maintains strong collaborations with research teams at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan and other international centers specializing in MS research.
