Marco Iacoboni is a Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and a member of the Jane and Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior and the Brain Research Institute. He directs the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Lab at the Ahmanson-Lovelace Brain Mapping Center, focusing on non-invasive brain stimulation and imaging techniques like TMS, tDCS, and fMRI.
His research explores mirror neuron systems, social cognition, empathy, and neural mechanisms of imitation. Key projects include investigating neuroplasticity in depression, reducing group prejudice through neuromodulation, neural substrates of empathy, and interdisciplinary applications of neuroscience in education and musicology. Recent work examines artificial empathy and multi-target TMS protocols for neuropsychiatric conditions.
His publications span 2025–2011, with recurring themes in neural plasticity, social behavior, and clinical applications of brain stimulation. Awards include The Brain Prize 2014 for contributions to understanding complex human functions.
Collaborative efforts involve labs specializing in Alzheimer's research, micro/nanotechnology, and neuroimaging, with students and researchers like Liz Losin, Katy Cross, and Zachary Wallmark leading initiatives in social neuroscience and neurotechnology.
