Marco Griepentrog is a Lecturer in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at ETH Zurich, where he researches terrestrial biogeochemistry and isotope applications. He earned his PhD in Soil Science and Biogeochemistry from the University of Zurich and completed postdoctoral research at Ghent University. His work examines molecular interactions between plants, soil, and atmosphere.
Griepentrog specializes in compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) of biomarkers to study carbon cycling and organic matter turnover. His research develops isotopic proxies for biogeochemical processes in soils, particularly using GDGTs as environmental indicators. Current projects investigate soil organic matter stabilization mechanisms and climate effects on biomarker distributions across global ecosystems.
His publications demonstrate methodological innovation in extracting climate signals from soil biomarkers. Recent work analyzes GDGT responses to soil chemistry variations in diverse environments from African wetlands to tropical rainforests.
