معرفی
Marco Gerling is a Senior Researcher at Karolinska Institutet, working within the Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology, specifically in the Unit of Surgery and Oncology. He leads the Cancer Cell Invasion Research Group, which focuses on understanding how cancer cells invade healthy tissue and developing new tools to inhibit this process.
His research interests center around cancer cell invasion mechanisms, particularly in liver metastases from colorectal, breast, and pancreatic cancers. His work explores tumor-stroma interactions, histopathological growth patterns, and the role of signaling pathways like Hedgehog in cancer progression.
Dr. Gerling's recent publications reveal a strong focus on liver metastases, with particular attention to tumor microenvironment interactions, histopathological characterization, and innovative approaches to cancer treatment monitoring through liquid biopsy. His work spans basic cancer biology, translational research, and clinical applications.
- Swedish Cancer Society grant (2023): Towards a novel treatment for liver metastases
- Swedish Research Council grant (2019-2024): Tumor-stroma interactions in liver metastasis
- Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft grant (2011-2014): Hedgehog Signaling in Colitis-associated Carcinogenesis
His research group includes doctoral students Sara Soderqvist and Annika Viljamaa, along with several other researchers working collaboratively to advance understanding of cancer metastasis mechanisms.
