Marco Arkesteijn is a Senior Lecturer in Sport, Exercise and Health at Aberystwyth University's Department of Life Sciences, focusing on biomechanics and physiology of human performance across aging and sports. He holds a PhD in Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Kent (2012) and an MSc in Human Movement Sciences from the Free University Amsterdam (2009).
Research Interests: His work adopts a multidisciplinary approach to frailty, aging, and functional ability. Key areas include biomechanical analysis of gait and postural control, quantifying physical activity, dietary interventions, sarcopenia-muscle strength relationships, and fatigue impacts. He contributes to the National Task Force for Falls Prevention in Wales and the Sport Wales Advisory Group.
Article Trends: His recent publications span cycling biomechanics, frailty monitoring, and aging mobility. Collaborative projects address community-based interventions, GP surgery initiatives for frailty, and clinical outcomes in older cancer patients. Research emphasizes wearable e-health, functional foods, and GP-led schemes.
Teaching Roles: Module coordination for courses like Technological Advances in Sport, Motor Learning, and Training Enhancement, alongside tutoring and ethics committee roles.
Projects: Funded by the Royal Society, EIT Health, and Compass (Brazil), with impacts on Functional Fitness Assessments (MOT) improving quality of life and safety.
Media Engagement: Regular contributor to public health discourse through DIY aging guides and home-based frailty tests, featured in 11 media outlets in 2025.
