Marcia E. Herman-Giddens, DrPH, is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Maternal and Child Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Gillings School of Global Public Health. She holds advanced degrees including a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH), Master of Public Health (MPH), and a Physician Assistant (PA) certification. With nearly 40 years of experience, her career spans pediatrics, academia, research, and child advocacy.
Her research focuses on child abuse prevention, pubertal development patterns in American children, and tick-borne infections in North Carolina. Notably, her work on puberty onset influenced national health guidelines, and her studies on child abuse homicides contributed to legislative changes. She currently conducts research on tick-borne diseases and reviews papers related to child growth and development.
Herman-Giddens holds numerous awards, including recognition from Duke University, the North Carolina Pediatric Society, and the Delta Omega Honorary Public Health Society. She actively serves on advisory boards, reviews medical journals, and teaches adult education courses on ticks and tick-borne diseases. Though not currently teaching regularly at UNC, she remains a prominent figure in public health education and policy.
