Marcia C.de Castro is the Andelot Professor of Demography and Chair of the Department of Global Health and Population at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. She also directs the Brazil Studies Program at Harvard’s David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies and holds affiliate roles at the Harvard University Center for the Environment and the Harvard Center for Population and Development Studies.

Research focuses on infectious disease transmission determinants, particularly in the Brazilian Amazon. Key areas include malaria, arboviruses, climate change impacts, and pandemic responses (e.g., Zika, COVID-19). Recent work addresses spatiotemporal patterns of disease spread, vaccine effectiveness, and health policy implications of ecological changes.
Publications (2024–2025) emphasize malaria epidemiology, tuberculosis mortality trends, and pandemic-related health outcomes. Her work spans interdisciplinary approaches linking demography, ecology, and public health policy.
Scientific awards: Elected member of AAAS.
Advisory roles include WHO Technical Consultations on Malaria, Brazil’s Ministry of Health collaborations, and boards of institutions like the Institute for the Studies of Health Policies (IEPS). Active in policy advocacy through columns in Folha de São Paulo.
