Marcelo Spina is a Professor and Hard Tech Director at the School of Architecture, Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), where he has been since 2001. He co-founded the internationally recognized design practice P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S in 1999, known for integrating advanced technology with form, novel tectonics, and innovative materials. His work spans global projects across multiple scales and cultures, exhibited at major institutions such as the Venice Biennale, Art Institute of Chicago, and Vienna MAK Museum.
Educated at the National University of Rosario (Professional Degree in Architecture) and Columbia University (Master in Architecture), Spina received prestigious awards including the William Kinne Fellowship and Honor Award for Excellence in Design. His research explores the intersection of digital technology and material innovation, emphasizing the ‘dichotomies of the real in architecture’ as highlighted in his lectures.
