Marcel Utz is a Professor of Magnetic Resonance, Microfluidics, and Complex Materials at the University of Southampton's School of Chemistry. He holds a MSc in Materials Science and a Dr sc (PhD) from ETH Zürich. His career includes roles at the University of Connecticut and University of Virginia before joining Southampton in 2012. He leads the Magnetic Resonance section and focuses on integrating microfluidic lab-on-a-chip technology with NMR spectroscopy/imaging for studying complex biological systems. His research also explores complex materials like polyelectrolyte hydrogels and micro-composites.
Key projects include the EPSRC-funded paraQchip and CRUK Khakoo initiatives, alongside EU grants like TISuMR. He teaches courses on NMR spectroscopy, kinetics, and quantum mechanics. Utz collaborates widely, as seen in high-impact journals like the Journal of the American Chemical Society and Analytical Chemistry. His work bridges chemical engineering, biomedical applications, and materials science, with a focus on advancing NMR technologies for real-time biological analysis.
