Marc van Oostendorp is a Professor of Dutch and Academic Communication at Radboud University Nijmegen, affiliated with the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures and the Centre for Language Studies. His academic work bridges theoretical linguistics with practical applications in language communication and education.
His research interests span multiple areas of linguistics including phonology, dialectology, interlinguistics, and language variation. He has made significant contributions to understanding phonological microvariation and the structure of linguistic segments. His work extends beyond theoretical linguistics into science communication and journalism, where he actively engages with the public on language issues.
Van Oostendorp serves as editor of the Journal of Linguistics and Neerlandistiek, and has been editor of the weekly language newsletter Taalpost since 2002. His publications demonstrate consistent engagement with both theoretical linguistics and practical language issues, showing particular interest in how linguistic theory connects with real-world language use and education.
He holds numerous ancillary positions including membership on editorial boards of several linguistic journals (Glossa, Phonology, Journal of Germanic Linguistics) and board memberships with language-related organizations such as Onze Taal, Stichting Linguistics in Open Access, and Raad voor de Neerlandistiek. Since June 2022, he has served as chair of the board of Stichting Promotie Academische Neerlandistiek Nederland.
Van Oostendorp's teaching portfolio includes courses on phonology, semantics and morphology, academic language proficiency (RADAr), and writing for non-specialist audiences. His educational approach emphasizes connecting linguistic theory with practical communication skills, reflecting his dual focus on academic research and public engagement with language issues.
