Marc Spooner is a Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Regina, where he has been employed since 2017. His scholarly work critically examines the impact of corporatization, neoliberalism, New Public Management, and audit culture on higher education institutions, academic freedom, and democratic values.
His research interests focus on how governance technologies impact scholars, scholarship, and academic freedom within universities. He is particularly concerned with market-driven approaches to higher education that prioritize narrow labor market outcomes over broader educational values and democratic principles.
His publications reveal a consistent theme examining the relationship between academic freedom and democratic health, university funding models, and the threats posed by performance-based metrics that universities cannot control. His work demonstrates how academic freedom serves as a gauge for the health of democracy itself.
Notable scholarly contributions include the award-winning edited collection Dissident Knowledge in Higher Education (2018) and the podcast series Demystifying Academic Freedom, which he co-hosts with Stephen Hurley.
