Marc Serre

Marc Serre is an Associate Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the University of North Carolina’s Gillings School of Global Public Health. He directs the BMElab, focusing on space/time geostatistics for environmental exposure and risk mapping. His research integrates geostatistical methods with temporal GIS data to address air and water pollution, environmental justice, and health impacts.

Education: PhD in Environmental Modeling from UNC Chapel Hill (1999), MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Iowa (1992), and advanced degrees in Physics/Engineering from French institutions (1989).

Research: Serre’s work spans geostatistical modeling, air/water quality mapping, and health risk assessment. Key projects include studying particulate matter’s effects on cognitive decline, ozone exposure in global health burdens, and environmental determinants of diseases like syphilis and gonorrhea in North Carolina.

Awards: Recognized with the Newton Underwood Award for Teaching (2021, 2005), Gillings Teaching Excellence Award (2017), and the Best Paper in Pedometrics (2005).
