Marc Lajeunesse is an Associate Professor in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of South Florida (Tampa, FL), within the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on ecology, evolutionary biology, and research synthesis, particularly in understanding parasite diversity and ecological/evolutionary principles through meta-analysis and comparative methods. He leads the Lajeunesse Lab, which develops tools for synthesizing ecological data and studies plant-herbivore interactions, parasite dynamics, and climate change impacts.
Education:
- Ph.D., Ecology, Cornell University, 2009
- M.Sc., Biology, Carleton University
- B.Sc. (Hons.), Biology, Carleton University
Research Interests: His work integrates meta-analysis, phylogenetic methods, and field experiments to address fundamental questions in ecology and evolution. Key themes include synthesizing published research, parasite specialization, herbivore-plant interactions, and the impacts of climate change on ecosystems. He is a pioneer in developing open-source software tools like OpenMEE and metagear for ecological meta-analyses.
Scientific Awards:
- Elected member of the Society for Research Synthesis Methodology
Advising & Labs: He mentors graduate and undergraduate students in research projects, including experimental evolution of spider mites, phytoplankton dynamics, and mosquito behavior. His lab collaborates broadly, emphasizing reproducible research and open-source tools. The lab is affiliated with initiatives like the GEISHA project studying storm impacts on lakes.
