Marc Hübner

Prof. Dr. Marc Hübner is a Professor in the Department of Medical Microbiology, Immunology, and Parasitology at the University of Bonn's Medical Faculty. His research focuses on translational microbiology, specifically targeting neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) caused by filarial parasites. He leads a lab investigating new therapies against parasitic helminths, protective immune responses involving eosinophils and neutrophils, and the immunomodulatory effects of filarial infections on metabolic diseases like insulin resistance.

His work combines preclinical testing of novel macrofilaricidal compounds (e.g., oxfendazole) with clinical collaboration, leveraging the Litomosoides sigmodontis rodent model. Key funding includes the German Center for Infection Research (DZIF), EU EDCTP3, and German Research Foundation (DFG) grants. Collaborations with Elanco and Boehringer Ingelheim advance drug development.

Research highlights include identifying eosinophil extracellular DNA traps (ETosis) triggered by microfilariae and discovering filarial infections' protective role against diet-induced insulin resistance.
