Marc Gruber is a Full Professor at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), holding the Chair in Entrepreneurship and Technology Commercialization within the College of Management of Technology. He serves as Vice President for Innovation at EPFL since 2017 and is the Director of the Entrepreneurship and Technology Commercialization Lab (ENTC). His academic journey spans prestigious institutions including the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Munich.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Management from the University of St. Gallen (2000)
- Venia Legendi for Management (Habilitation) from the University of Munich (2005)
Professor Gruber's research focuses on entrepreneurship, technology commercialization, innovation, strategic management, and public policy. His work explores how entrepreneurs identify and evaluate market opportunities, how venture capital decisions are made, and how founders' identities shape entrepreneurial processes. He has made significant contributions to understanding necessity entrepreneurship, particularly during economic crises, and has developed frameworks like the Market Opportunity Navigator that bridge academic theory with practical application.
His editorial leadership as Deputy & Associate Editor of the Academy of Management Journal since 2013 has positioned him at the forefront of advancing management scholarship. His recent work increasingly examines the intersection of artificial intelligence and management research, exploring new data sources and methodological approaches.
Professor Gruber has received recognition for his scholarly contributions through numerous publications in top-tier journals including Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, and Journal of Business Venturing.
He has supervised numerous doctoral students who have gone on to pursue academic and professional careers, contributing to the next generation of entrepreneurship scholars. His administrative roles, including Director of the MTE Master Program at EPFL (2009-2016) and current Vice Presidency for Innovation, demonstrate his commitment to translating research into practical impact.
Professor Gruber maintains active research collaborations across Europe and the United States, contributing to the global entrepreneurship research community through conferences, workshops, and collaborative projects focused on innovation and technology commercialization.
