Marc Conner serves as Provost of Washington and Lee University, overseeing academic affairs as the chief academic officer. He holds the Jo M. and James M. Ballengee Professorship in the Department of English within the College of Arts and Sciences. His academic career began in 1996 as an assistant professor, specializing in American, African-American, and Irish literature. Conner has led major initiatives including the Spring Term Revitalization, African-American Studies program (now Africana Studies), and diversity initiatives like the Advanced Research Cohort Program. He previously served as interim provost (2016–2017), associate provost (2013–2015), and English department chair (2012–2013). His administrative portfolio includes oversight of academic deans, international education, athletics, and the university library. Conner's work emphasizes supporting faculty and advancing liberal arts education.
Research focuses on intersections of race, identity, and literature across American, African-American, and Irish contexts. He has authored five books and multiple essays, with notable works analyzing Toni Morrison, Ralph Ellison, and James Joyce. His Great Courses lectures ('How to Read and Understand Shakespeare' and 'The Irish Identity') highlight his pedagogical reach. Current projects include completing The Selected Letters of Ralph Ellison and directing a Mellon grant on History in the Public Sphere.
