Marc Bernard Ackerman serves as Assistant Professor of Developmental Biology at Harvard University, holding appointments at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM) and Boston Children's Hospital, where he directs the orthodontics program and teaches pediatric dentistry and orthodontics residents.
His educational background includes a DMD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine (1998), orthodontics certification from the University of Rochester-Eastman Dental Center (2000), an MBA in executive leadership from Jacksonville University (2009), and a medical ethics fellowship from Harvard Medical School (2014).
Ackerman specializes in orthodontic interventions for children with dentofacial deformities, intellectual and physical disabilities, and sleep-disordered breathing, while advancing dental ethics through scholarly work. He has authored the monograph Enhancement Orthodontics: Theory and Practice (2007) and serves as editor-in-chief of Special Care in Dentistry Journal since 2013.
His accolades include fellowships from the Philadelphia College of Physicians, Academy of Dentistry for Persons with Disabilities, and American College of Dentists; the University of Pennsylvania Alumni Award of Merit; and the 2004 B.F. and Helen E. Dewel Award for clinical research excellence.
As director of orthodontics at Boston Children's Hospital, Ackerman mentors dental residents and leads clinical teams focused on complex pediatric cases involving children with special healthcare needs, integrating ethical frameworks into treatment protocols.
