Mara Buchbinder is a Professor and Chair of Social Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC–CH), an Adjunct Professor of Anthropology, and core faculty in the UNC Center for Bioethics. Her work bridges medical anthropology, bioethics, and health policy.

Dr. Buchbinder explores how patients, families, and healthcare providers navigate social and ethical challenges stemming from changes in medical technology, law, and health policy. She emphasizes the role of language in medicine and interdisciplinary inquiry in the medical humanities. Her current research includes studies on clinician burnout in ICU settings and mental health among obstetrician-gynecologists.

Dr. Buchbinder’s research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Greenwall Foundation, and Wenner-Gren Foundation. She is also a co-author and editor of influential works, including Scripting Death: Stories of Assisted Dying in America and The Social Medicine Reader, 3rd edition.
