Marília Santos

Marília Santos is a Staff Researcher at the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (INL), working within the Water Quality Research Group and Espiña Research Group. Her research focuses on developing advanced biosensors and engineered surfaces for environmental monitoring and microbial control applications.

Her educational background includes:

• BSc in Chemistry (2007) from the University of Aveiro, Portugal
• MSc in Analytical Chemistry and Quality Control (2008) from the University of Aveiro, Portugal
• PhD in Nanosciences (2014) from the University of Barcelona, Spain, with research at IBEC and University of Perpignan, France

Dr. Santos' research spans optical/electrochemical biosensors, microfluidics, and surface engineering for water contaminant detection and microorganism adhesion control. She specializes in lab-on-a-chip devices, automated monitoring systems, and engineered coatings with antibacterial/antifouling properties, targeting portable solutions for real-world environmental challenges.

Her publication record reveals a consistent focus on portable sensor development for aquatic environments, with increasing emphasis on ultrasensitive pathogen detection in aquaculture and innovative surface modifications for bacterial adhesion control. Recent work integrates nanotechnology with microfluidics to create cost-effective monitoring systems for toxins in food and water.

As a core member of INL's Espiña Research Group, she leads projects developing nanotechnology-based sensors for toxin/bacteria detection and engineered surfaces to control microorganism adhesion in water systems.
