Dr. Manuel Sebastian Mariani is a Research Group Leader at the University Research Priority Program on Social Networks (URPP Social Networks) at the University of Zurich since April 2022. Previously, he served as a Senior Research Associate from 2017 to 2022. His primary affiliation is with the Department of Business Administration, specifically the Chair of Marketing for Social Impact. He also holds an affiliation with the Institute of Fundamental and Frontier Science at UESTC in Chengdu, China.
His research focuses on collective consumer behavior, human-algorithm interactions, and economic complexity, employing methodologies such as network science, agent-based modeling, choice modeling, and machine learning. His work aims to bridge micro-level individual behaviors with macro-level collective outcomes, particularly in social systems and digital platforms.
Current projects include an SNF-funded initiative exploring how individual choices drive collective consumer behavior in social networks. This interdisciplinary effort combines consumer behavior studies with social network and machine learning methods to improve marketing interventions. His teaching includes courses on social dynamics and machine learning applications in marketing.
Key research areas span algorithmic bias, opinion dynamics, network-based ranking, and patent impact analysis. His work has been published in journals like Communications Physics, Journal of Informetrics, and Physics Reports.
