Manisha Padi is an Assistant Professor of Law at Berkeley Law School, University of California, Berkeley. She is currently on leave, serving as Senior Policy Advisor at the U.S. Department of the Treasury. Her expertise lies in consumer financial contracts, focusing on the intersection of law, economics, and public policy. Padi’s research evaluates the aggregate impact of legal frameworks on consumer welfare, financial institutions, and economic systems, with a focus on mortgage regulation and retirement policy.
Education: J.D. from Yale Law School and Ph.D. in Economics from MIT. She has held prestigious fellowships, including the Bigelow Fellowship and NSF Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Chicago.
Her research employs empirical methods to analyze topics such as the role of fiduciary duty in financial advice markets, annuity market equilibria using Chilean evidence, and the impact of political transitions on mortgage lending practices. Her work has been cited by the Securities and Exchange Commission and the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals.
Publications include articles in the Michigan Law Review and Boston University Law Review. Current projects include studies on consumer protection laws in mortgage markets and inclusive occupational licensing reforms.
