Prof. Manfred Kudlek was a Professor of Theoretical Computer Science at the University of Hamburg (Department of Computer Science) from 1977 until his retirement in 2005. He held an honorary professorship at the University of Iași, Romania since 2002. His academic career began with studies in physics (Diploma: 1966; PhD: 1970), followed by research and teaching in computer science. He was deeply involved in the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science (EATCS), attending all ICALP conferences and contributing reports to the EATCS Bulletin. A special issue of Fundamenta Informaticae (2014) was dedicated to his memory, highlighting his research legacy in formal languages and concurrency theory.
His research focused on foundational topics such as minimal Turing machines, Lindenmayer systems, Petri nets, and multiset automata. He also explored cross-disciplinary areas including numerical systems in indigenous languages and LaTeX encoding for non-Latin scripts. Manfred’s work emphasized international collaboration, particularly with Eastern European researchers, and he actively participated in global academic events until his death in 2012 during the Turing Centenary Conference in Cambridge, England. Survived by his wife and daughter, condolences were accepted via dedicated email and postal addresses managed by the university.
Manfred held leadership roles including membership in the Departmental Council, Curriculum Planning Committees, and the Library Committee. His post-retirement activities remained prolific, maintaining teaching and research engagement until his sudden passing. Notable for his passion for travel and conferences, he left a legacy of over 211 scientific publications and 152 conference reports.
