Dr. Manfred Finckh is a Postdoctoral Researcher in Ecological Modeling at the University of Hamburg, affiliated with the Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Natural Sciences, Department of Biology, and the Institute of Plant Sciences and Microbiology. He has been with the Ecological Modeling working group since January 2023, following over two decades of research in biodiversity, ecology, and evolution of plants at the same institution.
Finckh's research focuses on land use change in the Miombo region, biodiversity monitoring in Morocco and Angola, vegetation mapping, frost and fire dynamics in Angolan highlands, and the ecology and evolution of unique life forms including geoxylic suffrutices. His work spans multiple dimensions of ecological research, from plant-animal interactions and transhumant pastoralism to the evolution of specialized plant forms in challenging environments. He has made significant contributions to understanding vegetation patterns in African ecosystems, particularly in Angola and Morocco.
His publication record shows a strong emphasis on African biodiversity, with numerous recent papers examining geoxylic plants, fire ecology, vegetation mapping, and the impacts of climate and land use on ecosystems. His research often involves large-scale collaborative projects and datasets, with a clear trend toward integrating field observations with modeling approaches to understand ecological patterns and processes across African landscapes.
Finckh has held significant coordination roles in major research initiatives including the BMBF-initiative SASSCAL (2010-2022), the Future Okavango project (2010-2016), and the BIOTA Maroc project (2006-2010). His career demonstrates sustained engagement with African ecological research, particularly in Angola and Morocco, with a focus on practical applications for biodiversity conservation and sustainable land management.
His work is conducted through the Ecological Modeling group at the University of Hamburg's Institute of Plant Sciences and Microbiology, where he continues to advance research on African ecosystems and their response to environmental change.
