David Ackerly is the Dean of the Rausser College of Natural Resources and a Professor in the Department of Integrative Biology at UC Berkeley. His research focuses on climate change impacts on California biodiversity, including species distribution modeling, vegetation dynamics, and plant physiology. The Ackerly Lab collaborates with the Jepson Herbarium and conducts fieldwork at Pepperwood Preserve, Sonoma County. Key areas of study include climate refugia, plant-water relationships, and conservation strategies under climate change. His work bridges ecology, evolution, and applied conservation, with a focus on native California flora. Notable projects include analyzing fire-vegetation feedbacks, drought vulnerability in oaks, and the role of topography in microclimate fluctuations.
Research outputs emphasize predictive modeling and interdisciplinary approaches, with recent articles exploring compound fire-drought regimes, ecohydrological processes, and the eco-evolutionary dynamics of plant traits. His lab’s findings inform land management and biodiversity conservation efforts, particularly in mediterranean ecosystems. While no specific student advisees are listed, the lab supports graduate students and postdocs in climate change ecology and plant physiology.
