Mandar Deepak Muzumdar

Mandar Deepak Muzumdar, MD, is an Associate Professor in Genetics and Internal Medicine (Medical Oncology) at Yale School of Medicine. He holds leadership roles as Scientific Director of the Center for Gastrointestinal Cancers at Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center, and Co-Director of the Pancreas Program and Training Program in Genetics. His research focuses on understanding how genetic, environmental, and host factors drive cancer initiation and progression, with a focus on pancreatic and lung cancers. Muzumdar earned his MD from Stanford University and completed residencies and fellowships at prestigious institutions including Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and MIT’s Koch Institute.

Research Interests: His lab investigates obesity-driven pancreatic cancer mechanisms, tumor cell-host interactions, and therapeutic strategies using genetically engineered models. Key areas include endocrine-exocrine signaling in pancreatic tumors, clonal evolution, and nanoparticle-based drug delivery. Recent work highlights beta cells’ role in pancreatic cancer development and the impact of physical activity on cancer prevention.

Publications & Grants: Over 30 peer-reviewed articles since 2003, including high-impact studies in Cell, Nature Nanotechnology, and Cancer Research. Active grants focus on perioperative therapies, tumor microenvironment, and obesity-cancer links.
