Dr. Manashi Ray is a Professor of Sociology at West Virginia State University (WVSU), affiliated with the College of Business & Social Sciences. Her research focuses on international migration, transnationalism, and gendered migration patterns, with a specialization in South and East Asian refugee populations. She employs frameworks like Bourdieu’s theory of capital and life course perspectives to analyze migratory motives and policies influenced by globalization.
Dr. Ray teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on social inequality, gender, and community organization. She actively collaborates with students on research presented at local conferences. Her current book manuscript, Becoming Boundless: A Saga of Transnational Indian Entrepreneurs, explores the transnational networks of South Asian entrepreneurs. She holds governance roles in professional organizations such as the International Sociological Association (Treasurer of RC 32: Women, Gender and Society) and Sociologists for Women in Society.
Her research trends emphasize gender analysis in migration contexts, including the impact of crises like the pandemic on migrant invisibility and the role of transnational networks in entrepreneurship and family migration. Over her career, she has published widely in journals like the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies and Economic and Political Weekly, with a focus on migration, development, and equity.
