Malwina Czarny-Ratajczak is an Associate Professor at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, specializing in human genetics and molecular biology. Her research investigates genetic and epigenetic factors in cartilage development, aging, and primary osteoarthritis pathogenesis, with emphasis on sex-specific differences.
She holds a BS/MS in Biotechnology from Adam Mickiewicz University and PhD in Clinical Molecular Genetics from Poznan University of Medical Sciences, with postdoctoral training at Tulane's Center for Gene Therapy.
Research employs omics approaches to identify osteoarthritis-predisposing factors in Louisiana and European populations. Current projects examine telomere dysfunction, exosomal cargo (proteins/miRNAs), and extracellular vesicle-mediated intercellular communication in OA mouse models as potential therapeutic strategies.
Publications reflect expertise in skeletal genetics, including telomere biology in OA, COL2A1/MATN3/TRPV4 mutations in skeletal dysplasias, miRNA regulation, and extracellular vesicle function. Recent work includes sex-specific telomere length differences in knee OA patients.
Dr. Czarny is affiliated with Tulane's Center of Excellence in Sex-Based Biology & Medicine and Tulane Cancer Center.
