معرفی
Malte Asseln is an Assistant Professor in the Biomedical Device Design & Production group within the Department of Biomechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering Technology at the University of Twente. He leads interdisciplinary research that bridges engineering and clinical practice to create personalised, smart orthopaedic devices.
Education:
- Dipl.-Ing. in Mechanical Engineering (Medical Technology), RWTH Aachen University, 2012
- Dr.-Ing. (summa cum laude) in Biomechanics, RWTH Aachen University, 2018
Research interests revolve around the interaction between the musculoskeletal system and medical devices. His work integrates biomechanical modelling, finite element analysis, and multibody simulation to design next-generation implants, prostheses and orthoses that adapt to individual patient anatomy and physiology. He further explores regulatory pathways to expedite clinical translation.
Although no individual articles are listed in the supplied text, Asseln’s output is frequently presented at (inter)national conferences and has earned multiple best-paper/poster prizes, indicating a steady, high-visibility publication stream focused on orthopaedic biomechanics and medical device innovation.
Scientific awards & honours:
- Klee Prize 2019 – German Society of Biomedical Engineering
- VDI Young Professional Program 2022
- Travel & research scholarships from the German Society of Biomechanics
- Awards from the Computer Assisted Orthopedic Surgery Society
Grants & projects: He serves as (co-)applicant and project manager for several publicly and industrially funded research initiatives aimed at smart exoprosthesis development, patient-specific implant design, and computer-assisted surgery technologies.
Teaching & supervision: Actively involved in the BSc and MSc programmes of Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Technical Medicine and Industrial Design Engineering at Twente, he has supervised over 40 bachelor and master students, reflecting a strong commitment to knowledge transfer and engineering education.
Industrial & clinical engagement: Prior to his current appointment he held R&D leadership roles at BGW (medical-device safety & standardisation) and Ottobock (smart exoprosthesis research), and he continues to act as a technical consultant, ensuring close alignment between academic inquiry and real-world clinical needs.
