Malin Nystrand is an Assistant Professor in Global Political Economy at Roskilde University (RUC) since February 2022, leading the Centre for Arctic Studies since February 2025. She holds a PhD in Peace and Development Research from the University of Gothenburg, alongside an MA in Economics and a BA in Business Administration and Economics from multiple institutions including the University of Gothenburg and University of East Anglia. Her research focuses on political economy dynamics, particularly the intersection of power structures and economic systems.
Key research areas include the green transition’s colonial implications in Greenland and Sápmi, non-state managed cash transfers in Africa, and post-conflict policies in East Africa. She leads the DFF-funded 'Politics of Green Investments' project (2025–2028) and contributes to the DFC-funded CASH-IN project (2019–2025), analyzing cash transfers’ politicization in Uganda and Tanzania. She also participates in the BSU IV capacity-building program with Gulu University.
Her teaching spans master’s and bachelor’s programs in Global and Development Studies. Prior to academia, she worked as an independent consultant in international development, specializing in evaluations and organizational development.
