Malik Sekou

Malik Sekou serves as Professor and Chairman of the Department of History, Social Science and Political Science at the University of the Virgin Islands, maintaining dual affiliation as both faculty member and alumnus while also holding graduate degrees from the University of Delaware.

His academic credentials include:

• Bachelor's degree in Social Science from the University of the Virgin Islands (1989)
• Master's and Doctorate in Political Science from the University of Delaware

Research centers on Caribbean socio-political dynamics with specialized focus on U.S. Virgin Islands governance, Cuban relations, and critical issues including law enforcement systems, immigration policy impacts, and cost-of-living challenges. His scholarship integrates historical analysis with contemporary policy frameworks to address regional socio-economic disparities.

Professional engagement extends beyond academia through service as a researcher for the Virgin Islands Legislature, political consultant, and elected member of the Virgin Islands Board of Education. Notably, he was selected as Lieutenant Governor running mate for Independent gubernatorial candidate Kenneth Mapp during the 2010 election cycle.
