She serves as a Study Coordinator at the Adelaide Medical School within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and is a research member of the Northern Cardiology Research Group led by A/Prof Margaret Arstall. Dr. Pathirana works as a clinical researcher under the Department of Cardiology at the Lyell McEwin Hospital.
Dr. Pathirana completed her PhD in 2022, establishing her expertise in cardiovascular health and maternal outcomes. Her educational background focuses on the intersection of medicine, cardiology, and women's health.
Her primary research investigates the effect of pregnancy complications on cardiometabolic health in women and children, with emphasis on identifying risk factors for early intervention. She leads several key projects: Pregnancy and heart disease, Cardiovascular assessment after obstetric complications (COFFEE), The effect of pregnancy complications and lifestyle on mother-child health, and The effect of breastfeeding on cardiovascular disease risk. Her interests span clinical trial management, cardiovascular risk prevention in women, lactation's impact on metabolic syndrome, and preventative health for vulnerable populations.
Analysis of Dr. Pathirana's publications reveals a strong emphasis on systematic reviews examining cardiovascular risk factors related to pregnancy complications, gestational diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Her work bridges clinical research with public health implications, particularly highlighting how breastfeeding may mitigate cardiovascular risks following pregnancy complications. The majority of her recent work focuses on women's cardiovascular health trajectories after pregnancy complications.
Dr. Pathirana actively mentors students through research projects available for Honours, HDR, and Masters candidates at the Lyell McEwin Hospital. She requires police clearance and vaccinations for student participation, reflecting the clinical nature of her work. Her projects provide opportunities for students to engage in hospital-based clinical research with direct patient impact.
As part of the Northern Cardiovascular Research Group at Lyell McEwin Hospital, Dr. Pathirana contributes to research aimed at improving cardiovascular outcomes in northern Adelaide. The group focuses on coronary heart disease management, heart disorders during pregnancy, and women's heart disease, providing a collaborative environment for clinically relevant research.
